Just presented the New Global AAP Periodontal Classification Workshop again this past Friday & every time I do, I realize there are a few things that need clarification.

Firstly, the definition of Localized & generalized has been changed from sites to teeth i.e. localized is <30% & generalized is > or equal to 30% of teeth involved.

Secondly, 5 & 6mm Pocket Depths isn’t an indicator of periodontitis (could be pseudo pockets) just as 4mm Pocket Depths isn’t an indicator of just gingivitis (could be Grade C periodontitis patient).

Thirdly, the definitions of Reduced Periodontium:

  • Reduced Periodontium due to Periodontitis – the apical migration of the junctional epithelium initiated by biofilms.
  • Reduced periodontium in a non-periodontitis patient – the apical migration of the junctional epithelium initiated by an acquired & developmental condition(s) (predisposing factor(s)). Are you making the distinction?
