Course Summary:

Are you still putting the blame on your patient’s less than optimal outcomes solely on their poor oral hygiene? Or are you evaluating both their oral self-care and your therapeutic approach, therapies, and clinical skills? An evaluation needs to include both.  In this workshop you will discover how important the evaluation phase of treatment is and how to effectively establish a prognosis using three factors to determine future progression. 

The learning objectives are:

  • Evaluate optimal clinical & therapeutic outcomes during nonsurgical periodontal therapy.
  • Select oral self-care aids that are client specific and conducive to reducing inflammation.
  • Assess the various modes of delivery of chemotherapeutics available in treating inflammatory periodontal disease.
  • Evaluate the three “R’s” (retreat, recall, refer) needed during the reevaluation phase.
  • Appraise the appropriate prognosis based on the ability to control biofilms, predisposing & modifying factors.
  • Choose the appropriate maintenance therapy based on clinical rationale and recommendations of the AAP.
  • Decide the hygienist’s role after the nonsurgical periodontal therapy phase.
